IMG Models Signs Plus Size Male Model Nemar Parchment

Two years ago, Zach Miko made waves when he became the first plus size male model signed to IMG’s Brawn division. Now Nemar Parchment is joining the ranks, expanding visibility for big men everywhere.

If you feel like you’ve seen Nemar before, it might be because he models for the ASOS men’s plus size line.

Though fashion was in Nemar’s blood from an early age, he studied sociolinguistics when he first started university. He quickly realized that he wanted a more fashion-focused career and applied to the London College of Fashion. According to an interview with AZ Magazine, the experience wasn’t all it was cracked up to be:

“It just felt really pretentious, like ‘Look at me I am fashion’ and I don’t like to surround myself with people who are in this deluded space. It wasn’t friendly, it wasn’t warm or welcoming and that vibe continued throughout the duration of my course. Obviously, I got my degree so… yeah!”

Nemar went on work as a buyer for ASOS and River Island prior to becoming a model, proving that getting into the industry you want to be part of in some capacity can lead to bigger opportunities in the future. He was spotted by ASOS’ creative director, a few weeks later did a successful test shoot for them, and the rest is history.

I’m modeling for a load of different people and I’m getting DM’s all the time and people are really happy that they’re being represented. Because I feel like I represent the bigger guy, the black guy, the LGBT guy and people are really proud and really happy that they have some kind of representation.

Nemar joining IMG is a step forward for mainstream representation of plus size male models, something he touches upon in his interview with AZ Magazine:

“I’m modeling for a load of different people and I’m getting DM’s all the time and people are really happy that they’re being represented. Because I feel like I represent the bigger guy, the black guy, the LGBT guy and people are really proud and really happy that they have some kind of representation. But I feel like I wanna do something bigger. Fashion is amazing and it obviously pays my bills, but I feel like there’s more out there.”
