Answerland: Big Guy Beard Care Basics

Sponsored by DXL

Welcome to the last episode of Answerland in 2018 – this week, we’re taking on a question about beard care. David says:

I’m growing out my beard for the first time in my life and I’m not quite sure how to take care of it. What do you use to take care of your beard?

I’ll preface my answer by telling you that I’m not a national beard championship winner, so my beard care regimen isn’t all that involved. Still, it works for me. Everyone has a different process, so take the basics of mine and craft your own.

For the Bearded grooming products

Take care of the skin beneath your beard

I’m prone to dry skin, so exfoliating is super important. Invest in a wooden beard brush with boar’s hair bristles. They are higher quality, last longer and really get deep into your beard. Don’t be afraid to get in there and brush. You want to get the dirt dead skin out and soften your beard. That’s exactly what a beard brush can do for you.

Don’t forget to wash your beard

You wash the hair on your head, so shouldn’t you wash your beard? Absolutely! Keep in mind, though – you don’t have to do this every day. I wash mine a couple days a week. The other days, I still rinse it, but I’m not shampooing it. Speaking of shampoo, I’m a simple man with simple tastes, so I use Woody’s Beard Wash, and it gets the job done.

Time to Oil That Beard

Once I’m out of the shower, it’s time for me to apply the beard oil. I’ve been a fan of Brooklyn Grooming beard oil for years. The scents aren’t overpowering and the products just feel like they are high quality. Remember, a little goes a long way – be sure you get the skin and the hair with enough, but not too much.

Beard Control

Once I oil up, I’m usually done for the day. When my beard is longer, however, I sometimes use product to shape and control it. For me, this is usually the same product I use on the hair on my head. There are definitely beard-specific products out there, so take a look and see what you can find that fits your needs.

Go forth and grow your beard

That covers it for this beard-centric installment of Answerland. Remember, everyone has a different beard care regimen. Figure out what’s best for you and take care of that hair!
