Spencer on a bike

Spencer shares his story with us:

I’m a big guy (near 300 pounds with all gear said and done) that toodles around San Diego. I’ve been told I’m also quite quick and it’s not uncommon to turn my head and see several triathletes drafting behind me. Many times, people have said my draft is the largest they’ve ever experienced, so I often times pull for three cyclists at a time. My favorite ride is about 70 miles long, and it goes from Orange County all the way down to San Diego—a beautiful ride along the coast.  I once did an aggressive ride with (father of mountain biking) Gary Fisher on a road bike and burned over 3,000 calories in less than three hours. Of course, I have to maintain a steady stream of Powerbars/Cliff bars so I don’t pass out.

I do all this on a beautiful carbon fiber bicycle—many big guys like me are afraid of breaking those little frames. If anything, it’s the wheels that they should concern themselves with. The carbon fiber does an excellent job of dulling the constant mini-shocks that asphalt provides and can help with rider fatigue. A good set of strong wheels will avoid broken spokes and helps keep the bike from feeling like a noodle.
