The search for the perfect shoe feels endless. It needs to be comfortable, yet stylish. Affordable, yet well made. And unique, without looking well, weird. Samuel Hubbard shoes pretty much look like your typical stylish dress shoe, but slip them on and find that their comfort is far beyond any dress shoe you’ve worn before. Begun as what is now known as Rockport shoes, Samuel Hubbard Shoe Company was founded in 2014 by the grandson of the original founder. Their mission, to design shoes around function, first and foremost. Hubbard offers 3 lines of shoe, the Go to Work, Un-sneaker, and Limited Edition, in sizes to 14, including some with extended widths. Each line has a unique look, but at their core, they’re all made for comfort and longevity.
Samuel Hubbard sent over their Free Limited shoe in sky blue with the white Vibram outsole. The sky blue color makes these shoes more of a statement piece, but they pair well with chinos or jeans acting as the standout of a more basic outfit. The Limited line offers soft Milan leather in a variety of bright, vibrant colors with a white outsole to fit any taste. A feature worth noting is the glove leather lining, which makes the shoes more than comfortable to wear without socks. No rubbing, blisters, or uncomfortable stitching was detected while walking through the city. While the shoes have something of a bulky profile, they’re designed to be much lighter than they appear, with comfort being at the heart of their design. The insoles are triple density foam, which cradles the foot and provides extra support for big guys commuting through town. It’s not easy to find a shoe that embodies both all-day comfort and great style, but Samuel Hubbard Shoes get pretty darn close with the Free Limited shoe.
Another feature of Samuel Hubbard shoes is the ability to easily have them resoled. A once common practice, most people have steered away from resoling shoes in favor of simply replacing. However, with the quality of leather Hubbard is using, the upper should last a lifetime and develop a worn, unique patina. With extended use, you can expect the soles to wear out at over time. To deal with this issue, Hubbard has teamed with Resole America to make the resoling process easy and seamless for those of us who are less than familiar with the process. Regardless of the original color of the sole, customers can select from 6 different colors to customize the look of their shoe. A great option whether the soles are worn, or are simply in need of customization for a specific outfit or occasion.
As big guys, our shoes take a beating. Selecting a high quality shoe, that almost feels like a wardrobe investment, is a smart choice. The balance Samuel Hubbard strikes of comfort, quality, durability, customization and longevity is hard to come by. Some may be hesitant with a price tag of $225, plus $85 to resole the shoes at some point during their lifetime, however a high quality pair of shoes (especially in a timeless color and style) are able to carry the wearer through just about any situation.
