Meet Tyler Santor of Plus Size Men’s Fashion Magazine, The Justice

A shot from The Justice - magazine for big guys

As we’ve mentioned here many times before, there just aren’t a lot of media outlets out there that focus on men of size. This is one of the reasons I started Chubstr, and one of the reasons Tyler Santor put together his online magazine, The Justice. Since January, Tyler has been creating issues of the kind of magazine he’s long thought should exist, but just hasn’t: A fashion magazine for big guys with an artistic focus. I talked to Tyler via email about his reasons for starting The Justice, and what he hopes to turn it into long-term.

I started the magazine because there’s nothing else like it out there. For the longest time, I would complain about the fact there there was no plus size male modeling industry. Yes, commercially, there are stores that specialize in larger men’s clothing, but nothing like this. The industry just doesn’t exhibit our beauty. With my magazine, I want [to show that]. A place where we can express ourselves and show off our beauty.

What made you choose the name?
The name comes from this Shakespeare quote:

“Then the justice.
In fair round belly, with good capon lin’d,
With eyes severe, and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws, and modern instances,
And so he plays his part.”

The Justice is currently an online-only publication. Where can people read it?
The magazine is published at http://issuu.com/thejustice

You’ve released two issues so far this year, when can we expect the third?
The next issue is still being worked on. I have not been able to gather enough content to put out a third issue.

What sort of content are you looking for?A cover from an issue of The Justice
I am looking for fashion shots – high fashion, artistic, submissions with a theme within all the photos. So a set of photos that basically isn’t representing the plus size male [the way you see in commercial fashion]. The word I like to use most to describe what I am looking for is “edgy.”

Do you have plans to create paper copies of the magazine?
I have looked into printing the magazine, it’s just a bit too expensive for me to do it by myself. I have been able to create one copy that was a hard copy. It was of the first issues, and I made it with Elmer’s glue and determination [laughs].

Long term, what are you hoping to accomplish with The Justice?
I would love to be able to put out an issue of the magazine every 3 months or so, and I would like to team up with some writers in order to keep putting articles into the magazine. I would like to do themes for every issue when I am getting the amount of submissions I need, but until then, I will make the magazine when I have the content. I would love to be able to make issues for a long time coming.
