Introducing DOME Shades: Sunglasses for Big Heads

If you’re like me, and you were blessed with an oversized head, you know what kind of pain it can be to find sunglasses that fit. It’s not much fun wearing a pair that look like they’re holding on for dear life every time you put them on. Luckily, there’s someone out there who shares our pain and has decided to do something about it. Introducing DOME Shades – sunglasses for big heads.

DOME Shades creator Andrew Regan admits that he isn’t a big guy, but he does have a big head. “99% of non-sport sunglasses don’t fit large head sizes and are extremely uncomfortable after 20 minutes. I want to help correct this problem.” He’s doing this by creating a line of well-designed sunglasses that fit big heads comfortably while looking stylish.

Bruce from Chubstr in DOME Shades

Andrew specifically sought out European designers with deep experience in fashion eyewear design to help him make the perfect pair of sunglasses for a big head. Because of this, he was able to use raw materials as Ray-Ban, Bvlgari, Armani and more. When you put on a pair, you can feel the quality in the construction immediately. What are DOME Shades constructed from? We went straight to Andrew for details.

Frames: “The Kickstarter frames are M49 acetate, which is a sustainable/renewable material that’s a little bit heavier, which makes the colors “pop” more.”

Lenses: “The lenses are CR-39, which is a more glass-like plastic polymer. CR-39 is slightly heavier than polycarbonate and about half the weight of glass. Most prescription lenses are made of CR-39. CR-39 is also very hard to break, unlike glass. The optical clarity is almost identical to glass.”

Even though DOME Shades are made with those high end materials, they’re not going to retail for those same high end prices. Since there isn’t a retailing markup yet, Andrew tells us that he doesn’t have to charge as much as those other brands do. If you’re wondering about colors, according to the DOME Shades Kickstarter page, there will be a matte black, matte tortoise, and brown fade. I’m wearing the matte tortoise in these photos.
