Sized Up is our weekly feature that’ll help you find clothing in your size in cities around the world. You won’t see the same old mall stores here – we focus on smaller, custom shops and boutiques that are off the beaten path. This week we make our way to Boston, Massachusetts.
If you’re a big guy living in Boston, you might be surprised to find that there are quite a few places that offer big and tall men’s clothing that you’d actually want to wear. We’ve listed a few of the must-visit shops in the Boston area. Do you have more? Let us know in the comments. Without further ado:
Uniform is one place you definitely want to stop when in Boston. The store, located in Boston’s South End, focuses on contemporary lifestyle clothing, skincare and accessories – everything a guy needs in order to clean himself up a bit. Sizes regularly run to XXL in tops and the high 30’s in waist, but if you’re bigger than that, don’t fret; Uniform can special order clothing to fit your needs in specific brands. Levi’s and Swiss Army are two brands available in my size (3X & 44). The staff at Uniform is very helpful – ask for Drew and he’ll get you everything you need to fit your style.
Hajjar’s Big & Tall is more of your traditional B&T store, so you’ll probably come across the occasional scary sweater or jogging suit as you’re perusing their inventory. If you’re picky, you’ll find items that fit your style, with sizes to 5XB & 60 for the larger man, and 3XLT for the taller man. Brands such as Cutter and Buck, Columbia, and Polo Ralph Lauren are always available, as well as Tommy Bahama and Izod. With 5 locations in the Boston area, if you’re in need of some clothing quickly, Hajjar’s could be a good choice for you.
Bobby From Boston is a must-stop destination for anyone with an affinity for vintage clothing. As you can see from the (tiny) photo, this is a place with quite a bit of personality. You’ll find clothing from as far back as the 40’s, restored and available for purchase. From jackets to shoes to vintage denim, this shop has almost anything you could ask for. Sizes vary depending on what you’re looking for, but keep in mind that vintage clothing isn’t always available in larger sizes. They have a warehouse with larger sizes, so be sure to ask before counting them out. Worst case, there are always accessories to buy, and really, visiting Bobby From Boston is as much about the experience as it is about purchasing anything.
