Putting Hanz de Fuko Hair Products to the Test: Sponge Wax, Quicksand, and Pomade

Testing out Hanz de Fuko hair products

If you have fine hair like me, you know how much of a pain it can be to style it the way you want to. I can do one or two styles halfway decently – aside from that it doesn’t do much. Because of this, I’m constantly searching for solid product that’ll help me achieve whatever look I’m trying to get. When Birchbox reached out to tell us about their exclusive Hanz de Fuko men’s hair products, I couldn’t help but put them to the test. After spending a week trying their Quicksand, Modify Pomade, and Sponge Wax, I can tell you what worked really well for me, and what didn’t.

The company puts a real focus on making products using certified organic ingredients and natural plant extracts to help give you healthier hair: “Our unique formulations provide superior results while replenishing, soothing, and hydrating the hair and scalp. Ingredients such as antioxidants, amino acids, essential oils and key vitamins will guarantee your hair will always look and feel its best.” In addition, Hanz de Fuko goes out of their way to be more environmentally friendly, by using eco-friendly recyclable containers, and minimal packaging.

Hanz de Fuko Sponge Wax

Of the three products, I found the Hanz de Fuko Sponge Wax to be the most versatile. Made for short to medium cuts, it holds your hair in place, helps define it, and gives you a polished style without looking like you’ve got a lot of product in your hair. The wax itself is kind of creamy, which I prefer to more sticky and grainy alternatives. If you’re looking for a product that will help you create a variety of hairstyles, this is the one to pick up.

Hanz de Fuko Quicksand

Hanz de Fuko Quicksand is made to withstand storms, bedhead, and quick weekend trips to Las Vegas. This is a product that will add volume, absorb excessive oil and give your hair texture without adding any additional weight. That means if you’re pulling an all-nighter and you need your hair to look like you fixed it right out of the shower, Quicksand is for you. You can use a small amount as a dry shampoo to absorb oil in your hair and scalp, or you can add a bit more to use it for actually styling your hair.

The product melts easily in your hands, which makes it easy to distribute. If you’re a texture freak, this one may take some getting used to, as it’s grainy. Luckily, it washes out easily. There’s a scent to all three of these products, and Quicksand’s smell stands out the most, but in a good way. If you want to pull off more extreme, gravity-defying looks, this is the one for you.

Hanz de Fuko Modify Pomade

The Hanz de Fuko Modify Pomade is a modern take on the tried and true pomade you’ve been using forever. According to Birchbox, Modify Pomade is for you if “You’re a fan of the slicked back, rockabilly-inspired do—but you don’t want to look like a used car salesman.” This lightweight pomade gets the job done without being overly greasy, which is good or bad depending on the look you’re going for. It’s recommended that you leave the top off this can of pomade overnight so that it has a chance to thicken. I found the product to be a little sticky and difficult to distribute because it didn’t melt in my hands very well. It’s not as shiny as I’m used to, but it had more hold. Ultimately, Modify Pomade will give you a clean look and hold your hair in place.

These three Hanz de Fuko products are being sold exclusively by Birchbox – you can pick them up for $17.50 each in the hair section of the Birchbox Men’s Shop.
