Urist McDorf asks: My other half is a tallish, leggy, bearded goth guy with a prominent potbelly. We’re looking for smart jackets and suits to update his wardrobe with a subtle gothic edge. He’s keen on double-breasted coats and jackets, especially slightly longer ones that skim the top of the thighs or cover the first few inches of thigh. But people keep saying guys with bellies “can’t” wear double-breasted stuff. Are they right? I’d love to see style pics of bigger guys rocking DBs to prove them wrong!
I asked contributing editor Matthew Simko to take a stab at this question, and here’s what he had to say: “I would instinctively say no to the double breasted jacket because all the attention would be focused on his belly. He’s tall, so that helps, but it could mean that the jacket would “tent” out at the bottom because of his potbelly. You have to be really careful with how you wear a double breasted jacket, and I don’t think this one would fit him properly. They’re coming back and they’re “trendy,” but wear it wrong and you look like Uncle Glenn at Thanksgiving dinner.”
