It’s a new year. You made it! Now we’ve entered that time when everyone starts making resolutions, many of which revolve around weight loss. According to U.S. News & World Report, 80% of the resolutions people make will fail by February. Instead of putting that kind of undue stress on yourself, why not resolve to do smaller things that can make a longer-term difference? Here are 5 New Years resolutions you can make today that don’t involve weight loss.
Find Your Style
Your style is an extension of your personality. Make 2018 the year you put together more looks you actually want to wear in the sizes you need. Feeling good about how you look can make a difference in your overall outlook. Having a goal to dress up more, keep yourself well-groomed and just generally look more polished is a step in the right direction. Not sure where to start? Be More Adventurous
In 2017, I resolved to say yes to (just about) anything that came my way. Doing this opened up new opportunities I never dreamed I’d have. If you’re at all like me, more often than not your natural inclination is to hide yourself away from people and experiences. Push back against this by meeting new people, traveling, trying new things, and just generally getting out of your comfort zone. It’s not always easy, but more often than not, it’s more rewarding.
Find Something You Like & Learn More About It
Remember that thing you used to love to do, but you stopped for one reason or another? 2018 is the perfect time to pick it up again. Maybe it’s a project you started but never finished, or maybe it’s something you’ve always wanted to learn how to do. Get into that thing and run with it. There are always going to be excuses for not doing something, but having your own projects or hobbies can help energize the regular, more mundane parts of your life.

Be More Disciplined (in the Ways That Matter)
I spent a lot of 2017 without focus. I knew there were a few things I wanted to accomplish, and I accomplished those things, but I wasn’t very disciplined. Running your own business means you’ve got to put on your big boy pants and schedule your time, something I didn’t do a great job with. This year, I’ve given myself a schedule. I’m already finding that I’m getting more done and just generally more effective.
Think about ways you can become more disciplined in order to accomplish your goals. Just having a big goal sitting out there without any planning around it doesn’t do anything; make a plan and stick to it and you’ll get things done. Don’t have a big goal? Try it with something smaller in your life? It’s a good way to get started.
Make More Time For Yourself
This year should be the Year of You. Work, family and other obligations can take all of your time. Put some of the focus back on yourself by doing things you enjoy. Treat yourself! Go to the spa, get a massage, have a beer, draw, paint, hike – you get the idea. Doing things that make you happy will make those work and family obligations easier to deal with and will increase your overall contentedness.
