Rock The Shorts Without Looking Slobby

fuckingdyke asked the following at the Big Boy Fashion tumblr:

I just found this blog, and haven’t made it through the archives entirely yet, but I am at a loss for shorts. I find myself wearing jeans and slacks always because I have no idea how the hell to make a pair of shorts not look slobby. There are only so many times I can use the “I live by the beach, I only wear board shorts” excuse. Advice?

Shorts are always going to be a bit more laid back than jeans, so using other articles of clothing to pull together a specific look is more important. Felix Incognito gave us an example a few months ago via submission and the following explanation:

I went on a date with a swell gal, but I had ratty threads. Since we hit it off, I went out to the New Bohemian in Austin and bought this killer, 70s western jacket for less than 30 bones. I still need to have it taken it a little, but, damn, I feel dapper in this jacket.

Dapper indeed. I recommend experimenting a bit – try something similar to this look and see if it works. Check places like Gap, Need Supply Co., or Zappos for a variety of looks and styles. As far as jackets and shirts go, take a look at Bluefly’s blazer options and something collared from American Apparel.
