Sized Up is a weekly feature that will help you find clothing in your size in cities around the world. You won’t see the same old mall stores here; we focus on smaller, custom shops and boutiques that are off the beaten path. This week we venture to the Minneapolis-St. Paul region of Minnesota.
When you think of Minneapolis, fashion probably isn’t the first thing to come to mind. You might be surprised to find that the Minneapolis-St. Paul area offers a variety of shops that carry men’s big and tall clothing in styles you’ll actually want to wear. We’ve chosen a few of our favorites, which you’ll find below.
Heimie’s Haberdashery
400 St. Peter St. Paul, MN 55102 651-224-2354 Mon-Fri 10am-7pm Sat 10am-5pm www.heimies.com Heimies on FacebookEstablished in 1921, Heimie’s Haberdashery specializes in the traditional, custom-fit suit. When you walk through the door, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a time where individual attention and a great customer experience was what mattered most. The team at Heimie’s prides themselves on getting their customers the best fit and the right look with their off the rack, made to measure, or custom suit options. With the ability to fit (at least) up to size 60 long in suits, you won’t have a problem finding something in your size.
Heimie’s offers more than suits – from cuff links, to wallets, to eye wear, look at their selection of accessories to find the perfect piece to complete your suit. While you’re there, enjoy a cigar from the humidor or treat yourself to a traditional shave by one of their master barbers. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to listen to the sax player that plays outside the front of the building around lunch time.
Tatters Vintage Clothing
2928 Lyndale Avenue South Minneapolis, MN 55408 612-823-5285 Mon-Fri 11am-8pm Sat 10am-6pm Sun Noon-6pm www.tattersvintageclothing.com Tatters on FacebookOf all the places we researched for big and tall men’s clothing in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, Tatters seemed to have the best selection to choose from. The clothing they offer is predominately vintage, which is traditionally difficult to track down in extended sizes, but Tatters has a surplus of men’s items available. Their rule is that they only buy pre 80’s clothing, so if you’re looking for western wear or dress wear from the 60’s and 70’s or earlier, this is the first place you should look. With new products added each day, you’ll be able to find something that fits your style. Did I mention that they even have hats in large sizes? It’s worth a visit for that reason alone!
I spoke with Katrina at Tatters and she told me that they had just picked up an extra 2,000 lbs of clothing for customers to choose from, and that if you mention that you saw this article on Chubstr, you’d get 10% off your purchase! This place is a best kept secret for guys, so be sure you check it out when you’re looking for new pieces to add to your wardrobe.
Up Six Vintage
157 n. snelling ave. st. paul, minnesota 55104 651-917-0470 Tues-Sat Noon-6pm Sunday Noon-4pm Closed Mondays www.upsixvintage.com Up Six on FacebookOne half of Up Six Vintage sells furniture like the pieces you see in the photo to the right, and the other half sells clothing spanning from the 50’s to the 90’s. Megan, Up Six’s owner told me that their clothing selection is pretty evenly split between women’s and men’s, so that should give you a better idea of the possibilities should you decide to shop there. Sizes go up to 4X in tops and 44 in bottoms, and there’s something new added every day, so chances are you’ll find something there that tickles your fancy.
Blacklist Vintage
25 East 26th Street Minneapolis, MN 55404 612-872-8552 Tues-Sat Noon-7pm Sunday Noon-5pm Closed Monday www.blacklistvintage.com Blacklist Vintage Facebook GroupBlacklist Vintage doesn’t have the largest selection of big men’s clothing to choose from, but they make up for it with their accessories. Choose from bowties, cuff links, tie bars, pocket squares, opera scarves, wallets, belt buckles and shoes to find those accessories that finish up your look. Their specialty is clothing from the 20’s to the 80’s, so if you’re trying to find the piece to complete that steampunk outfit, or that dapper dandy look, Blacklist Vintage could be the place for you.
Below you’ll find a few other honorable mentions – places that might offer clothing in extended sizes, but don’t specialize in it:
