The Stylistic: Keenan Maistry

The Stylistic: Keenan Maistry from Houston, Texas

Keenan's WTF TeeWelcome to The Stylistic, the feature that has us talking to interesting, stylish gents to learn how they put together their look and what influences them. This week we talk to drafter and all around stylish guy, Keenan Maistry.

How old are you? In bear years, I’m probably like 5 years old. Oh, you meant human years? 24 years young.

Where do you live?
I live in the concrete jungle of Houston, TX. I’m originally from South Africa, but I’ve been in Houston for about 6 years or so.

What do you do?
I do a lot of things! But, as a profession, I’m a Drafter. Basically I draw up blueprints of different parts and assemblies, and the odd floor plan when needed.

How would you describe your style?
Wow, that’s really a tough question. I look at a lot of things for inspiration, whether it be from the 70’s or 80’s, or even what’s fashionable today. Usually my basis falls on music too, like Rock, Pop, Grunge, Vintage, Prep, Punk, Glam and many other musical influences. It really depends what I feel like. I like to combine different styles too, but not try to get lost in references.

Where are your favorite places to shop?
Okay well, I’m a cheapskate, putting that out there! Haha! But, it’s easy to see that you don’t need to shop at expensive department store to find some great clothes. I usually shop at places like TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack and the like. But, as this is Chubstr, I’m going to say Burlington has a really nice Big and Tall section, and Marshalls Big and Tall has the odd winner here and there. Department storewise, I usually go to Marc Ecko – Cut ‘n Sew, Buckle, Aldo, Express and Guess for inspiration and ideas too, and they usually have the odd special/discounts where you can get great clothing at great prices.

Choose one or answer them all: Hobbies, Vices, Heroes?
Hobbies – Well, fashion and shopping, obviously! But I do enjoy video games, photography, music, movies, art, food and dining, animals and automobiles. So, the basics ofKeenan greatness, basically!

Vices – Oh wow, that’s a tough one. I guess eating would be a vice, I just love great food! Laziness would count as a vice, yeah? Then yeah.

Heroes – My sister. She’s the most amazing person you’d ever come across, and she has taught me the many things in my life that helped me out greatly. She also a very fashionable, artistic person, and is also a part time makeup artist and model. Too bad she’s a size 2!

Is there any piece of clothing or accessory you couldn’t do without?
To be honest, I don’t! I guess my wallet, because it has my life in it, or my phone. But fashion wise, I’m really versatile. But, the one thing that would carry over to different styles, that I would include a lot, is my Sunglasses.

Do you have a style tip that works for you that you’d like to share with us?
For both guys and girls – Don’t be afraid! If you want to experiment with different items of clothing and styles, do it! I used to hate bright colours, but now I love wearing them. I am generally not afraid to try out things I’d like to wear, but if you see something you like, don’t be afraid to try it! It might work amazingly on you. On that note, an impeccable hairstyle (or intentional unkempt hair if that’s your thing) helps a great deal too. It’s amazing how a hairstyle could influence an outfit.

For guys – Invest in a really good flannel or plaid shirt. Plaid and Flannel/Plaid looks flattering on anyone. Aim for your favourite colours and combinations. If you’re a Jeans-‘n-T-shirt guy, wear a pop culture reference shirt, with a vintage flair. You could easily pick one of those up at Target or Walmart.

For girls – Wear colour popping accessories, when wearing something a little downtempo, like achromatics, earth tones and textures. Even with nail colour, try your hand (pun intended) at some bright colours!
