Make it Through Movember with These 3 Tips

Nakia shaved for Movember

The amazing Nakia showed us how it was done during Movember 2014

It’s that time of year again – Movember is upon us. If you’re unfamiliar, the Movember movement is all about creating positive change for men’s health by raising awareness and educating men about the dangers of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. They do this by encouraging you to get beardy. Or mustache-y. You start with a clean shaven face on 11/1, and you let that bad boy accumulate hair until 11/30.

Though their focus is mostly on growing a mustache, there’s no rule that says you can’t grow out a full beard if you want to. An itchy proposition, to say the least. Not willing to power through the growth period your facial hair needs to achieve critical mass? Here are some tips to help you make it through:

Calm the Itch

Nobody likes having an itchy face. Neutralize the itch by keeping your face washed with warm water, and by shampooing and conditioning your newly sprouted hair.

There’s Nothing Wrong with a Little Preening

Movember doesn’t mean that trimming and cleaning up your facial hair is off-limits. Take advantage of that, and keep your mustache and beard under control. Trim stray hairs and use product if you’ve suddenly got enough facial fur to warrant it. It IS possible to look good while you’re growing out your hair.

Pay Attention to What You’re Eating

Food is great, but when it comes to longer facial hair, food is not always your friend. Take it from someone with a beard. If you’re not deliberate about the way you approach your food, you’ll be more apt to wear it on your facial hair than you’re probably comfortable with. Avoid messy, sloppy foods, and extra frothy drinks. A milkshake ring around your face isn’t the kind of fashion accessory you want to add to your look.

That should be enough to get your started. At the end of the month, we’ll be talking about what to do with your facial hair when December rolls around. Good luck and happy growing!
