We reference the phrase “bespoke” in terms of custom clothing quite frequently here at Chubstr. It’s become a part of our daily lexicon, but we know it may not be a part of everyone’s. “Bespoke” has its origins in olde English and yes, it means custom-tailored clothing, but it derives from the practice of writing or embroidering a man’s surname on his garments. It was “spoken for.”
We didn’t know about those origins, but certainly found the information worthy of passing along, and all thanks to Bespoken Clothiers. The company, which bills themselves as “part Sevile Row and part Rock n’ Roll,” like many of our favorites, features a vintage sensibility. In fact, the company emphasizes the combination of old-school quality and modern styles.
At the moment, Bespoken Clothiers offer a line of everything from pants and shirts to outerwear that are largely only available up to an XL. While these aren’t very practical sizes in ready-to-wear, the company’s lookbook offers plenty of inspiration for styles to recreate.
Don’t worry, we wouldn’t waste space on a “look but don’t touch” basis. What we really love about Bespoken Clothiers is their made to measure custom bespoken shirts. Retailing at $245, these shirts are made to order and well worth the investment.
Not only do you have the option of specifying your measurements, you can choose the fabric, collar and cuff style, and if you feel so inclined, you can specify a special Gloucester wash to give your bespoken shirt a worn-in feel.
Fit is so important to getting your unique style across and feeling great about how you look, we’re always thrilled to find new options for custom-made clothing. At the moment, Bespoken Clothiers sizing options (pictured, right) extend to a 50.5 inch chest size, 47 waist, 29 sleeve, and 18 in. collar.
If these shirts don’t look quite like your style, give the accessories section a good look. Bespoken carries a pretty robust variety of great shoes, pocket squares, and interesting tie clips that just might tickle your fancy.
You can order from Bespoken Clothiers online, or check out their list of stockists if you’d like a more individualized experience.
