Being a native St. Louisan, it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t include one of my favorite places to eat and hang out in St. Louis: Blueberry Hill. It’s been an STL landmark since 1972 when it started out as a two room pub with a really good selection of songs on the jukebox. Today it consists of 10 themed rooms that run the spectrum from fun to just plain odd. Live music abounds at Blueberry Hill, with the Duck Room and the Elvis Room being large enough to accommodate nationally touring acts and surprise guests alike.

But we’re here to talk about the food, aren’t we?

The Wagyu Burger

The Wagyu Burger. Yes, there's a burger under all that egg

Blueberry Hill makes a mean hamburger, and they’ve got the awards to prove it. On this latest visit, my companion and I chose to stick with hamburgers and wings – two things they do very, very well. She chose the Famous 7 oz. Hamburger, and I opted for the Wagyu Burger – an 8 oz. burger with Canadian bacon, American cheese and a fried egg. The wings? Naked. Of 60 varieties of bottled beer and 18 types on tap, all I could come up with is a Newcastle? That’s okay, because it was pretty damn tasty. Needless to say, if you’re adventurous with your beer, Blueberry Hill will make you very happy.

There’s a lot to choose from on the menu if you’re not a traditionalist; from gazpacho soup ($3.50), to the tuna salad sandwich ($5.75), to specialties like the jerk chicken breast ($7.95), chances are they’ll have something you’ll enjoy. Did I mention they do breakfast all day? Treat yourself to flapjacks at 5pm, if you’re so inclined.

If you’re visiting the St. Louis area, your trip won’t be complete without a stop at the University City Loop, and more specifically, Blueberry Hill. Sample the food, sample the beer – catch a band there. If you’re lucky, you might get to see the legendary Chuck Berry playing there during one of his monthly shows.
