The Stylistic: Kurt Jo From Brooklyn, New York

Kurt Jo in NYC
Welcome to The Stylistic, the feature that has us talking to interesting, stylish gents to learn how they put together their look and what influences them. This week, we speak with DJ Kurt Jo of New York (by way of Hawaii). Kurt talks to us about his mixes, his style, and his favorite unhealthy obsession.
How old are you?

32 years oldWhere do you live?

Originally from Maui, Hawaii. Moved to New York City in 2005 and currently residing in Brooklyn.Kurt Jo Cleans Up

What do you do?
Alarm central station supervisor, assistant at a social media company (Iced Media) and my love and passion is DJing. Mixshows featured world wide and on the web via NRRRadio, DanceRadioNetwork and host my own podcast at djkurtjo.podomatic.com

How did you get started?
Back in the early 90’s, when I was in the 6th grade, we had a dance and I was enamoured by the dj and what they were doing with the music and making the people move. It has been my passion since then to become a dj, as well as have my own radio show. I started interning at Wild 105.5fm on Maui and that’s where I honed into my inner DJ and started my journey into DJing.
How would you describe your style?
Very laid back and casual, with hints of “cool” thrown in for good measure.
Where are your favorite places to shop?
As most big boys know, it’s a bit hard to find “cool” clothes in our size. I’ve been quite keen on shirt.woot.com, they do go up to 3xl and have some really great designs. The Ecko Outletshave some bigger sizes, and great deals as well.
Choose one or answer them all: Hobbies, Vices, Heroes?
Hobbies: meandering around NYC and exploring the sights and food of the city. Trying to keep up to date with what’s new and hot in the dance/electronica world.
Vices: A borderline unhealthy obsession with peanut butter…and meat.

Heroes: My parents, for having music in the house for as long as I can remember, and also for instilling me with such a hard work ethic. Also the crew back at Wild 105.5fm, they helped me become what I am today.

Is there any piece of clothing or accessory you couldn’t do without?Kurt and the Scarf

Under Armour boxer briefs, a fat boy’s best friend, say no to chub rub! Also my suspenders, I’ve been belt-free for almost 2 years, it’s the best thing ever.

Do you have a style tip that works for you that you’d like to share with us?
First off, be comfortable with what you look like. There’s quite the stigma attached to being big. Big is beautiful! Find what you like, and make it work for you. Just because we’re big, doesn’t mean we can’t look good.
